Collage Works, 1987–1999
Isham’s mastery of collage technique is clear from this series of works that show the influence of Haitian spirit religious practices, the notion of the human enveloped by the spirit world, which both affects people on earth but also draws them upward. Isham embeds the silhouette in loose grids of coloration, using strong chromatic combinations of analogous colors that shift in density from concentrated to dissolved. Gestural brushstrokes combine with hard-edged forms, accompanied by suggestions of vegetation on their upward trajectory.
