Gethsemane Series, 1964

A strong spiritual underpinning of Christian iconography interpenetrates the ancient Chinese oracle bone calligraphic hieroglyphs in a series of seven vertical paintings exhibited in St John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong. Named for Christ’s anguish on the Mount of Olives (Luke 22:43-44), Isham uses texture, value, and impressionistic color fields to point her emerging spiritual concerns at this time.
