Tantric Dance Series, 20032004

The ancient shamanistic technique of the tantric dance is derived from Tibetan Buddhism in which couples respond organically to touch, physically reacting to stimuli from intertwining movements. Emphasizing this connection between two distinct elements, Isham uses line and color to draw on the energy of each. The vertical format suggests a relationship between viewer and artwork at human scale. Lines move from upper edge to lower edge or conversely, but do so circuitously—merging and overlapping in parallel, as if responding to changing proximities. Colors are saturated and chroma is high, reflecting the charge between line and color.
